When I started my journey as an IT sourcer, I thought the role was straightforward: sit at a computer, read job descriptions, and search for candidates. It all seemed so simple at first, and I believed success was just a matter of finding the right search terms and sending messages. But I quickly realized that sourcing is so much more than that.
In the beginning, my approach was basic—type in keywords, pick the first candidate I found, and send them a message. Unsurprisingly, my responses were inconsistent, and sometimes, the replies were harsh. I didn’t understand how to craft the right message or how to connect with candidates in a meaningful way. I struggled to see what made each candidate unique and how to tailor my communication accordingly.
On top of that, my English proficiency was low, which added another layer of difficulty. Communicating effectively in a second language while navigating the complexities of a new role was overwhelming at times. I often felt like I was hitting roadblocks I couldn’t overcome.
But those challenges didn’t stop me. Day by day, I committed to improving. I practiced my communication skills relentlessly, learning how to personalize my outreach and genuinely connect with candidates. I studied the intricacies of different roles, not just their technical requirements but also the soft skills that made someone a great fit. Slowly, I started seeing patterns and understanding what made some candidates stand out.
The turning point came when I realized that sourcing isn’t just about finding candidates; it’s about building relationships. It’s about understanding who they are, what drives them, and what value they can bring to an organization. I began focusing on the human side of the process—and that’s when my success as a sourcer truly began to grow.
Every day was a lesson, and every interaction brought new insights. Over time, I built my confidence, improved my English, and developed a system for approaching candidates with empathy and precision. The result? More meaningful conversations, better matches, and a genuine passion for what I do.
Sourcing, I’ve learned, is an art as much as it is a skill. While AI tools may assist us, nothing can replace the human touch. It takes curiosity, dedication, and the ability to adapt to truly excel in this field. And while the journey wasn’t easy, it’s those challenges that shaped me into the professional I am today.
Starting a new career path is rarely easy. Everyone faces challenges, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: growth happens when you push through those obstacles. It’s easy to give up and start something new, but if you quit at every hurdle, real career progress will always be out of reach.
